Best Vacuum Cleaners for Carpets, Hard Floors and Pet Hair

Compare corded, cordless and robot cleaning, with practical advice on floors, stairs and dust disposal.

Vacuum cleanersProducts shortlisted: 11Last updated

A good vacuum needs to suit both your floors and the way you clean. Our overall choice is the Shark PowerDetect AZ3900UKTBK for sustained mixed-floor cleaning; the Morphy Richards PowerSphere keeps the purchase cost low, while the Numatic Henry HVR160-11 offers a larger sealed bag and longer cord. Cordless sticks, bagged cylinders and a capable robot offer different answers when carrying, stairs or day-to-day effort matter more.

This guide covers dry dust, crumbs and hair. For a closer cordless comparison, see our Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaners. Washing a carpet or scrubbing a hard floor is a separate job: our Best Carpet Cleaners and Best Vacuum Mops explain those choices.

How to choose a vacuum cleaner

Start with your floors and mess

Carpets with embedded hair benefit from an effective powered brush and suitable pile settings; delicate hard floors need the right brush or soft roller. Check your flooring’s care instructions, and compare pickup and handling rather than motor wattage alone.

Choose a format you can use comfortably

A cylinder keeps the motor on the floor but leaves a body and hose to pull around. An upright or stick can be quicker to grab; try the steering, grip and carrying weight, especially if you have stairs or limited hand strength.

Compare useful reach and battery time

For corded cleaners, distinguish cable length from total cleaning reach. Cordless maximum figures often use low power or a non-powered tool; check powered-head runtime, recharge time and whether the battery can be changed.

Think about dust disposal and upkeep

A bag contains dirt during replacement but adds a consumable cost. Bagless cups need emptying and filter care; an auto-empty dock reduces daily handling without removing the need to empty its larger container or replace its bag.

Check stairs, storage and supplied tools

A good floorhead does not guarantee easy stair or sofa cleaning. Check the supplied small tools, whether a hose or handheld section is comfortable to use, and where the cleaner, charger and accessories will live.

Use a robot for the jobs it can reach

Robots are useful for scheduled floor cleaning but cannot vacuum stairs, upholstery or every edge. Check furniture clearance, thresholds, app requirements and station space; bags, brushes, dirty water and mop trays still need attention.

Shark PowerDetect AZ3900UKTBK

AZ3900UKTBK · corded upright with powered lift-away

Best Overall Vacuum Cleaner

Shark PowerDetect AZ3900UKTBK upright vacuum with hand tools

View full product page

The Shark PowerDetect AZ3900UKTBK combines strong carpet and hair pickup with a two-roller head that also handles hard floors. Its sensors adjust cleaning as the floor and dirt change, while the powered lift-away design lets you separate the body for stairs and lower spaces. It is our overall choice for regular whole-home cleaning when carrying weight matters less than sustained cleaning.

Format
Bagless corded upright
Dust capacity / tanks
-
Cord, reach or runtime
8m power cord

Key features

  • Two-roller floorhead with dirt, floor, edge and direction sensing
  • Powered lift-away body for stairs and low spaces
  • 8m cord and a manually emptied dust cup
  • Pet, duster-crevice and multi-surface tools; anti-allergen brush and tool bag

Strengths

  • Strong fine-dirt and hair pickup on carpets
  • Handles mixed floors without changing the main head
  • Powered lift-away adds useful cleaning flexibility
  • No battery wait during a longer clean

Limitations

  • Substantial weight when carrying between floors
  • Wide head is awkward in tight spaces
  • Larger debris can need another pass
  • Cord and manual bin emptying add handling

Verdict

There is a useful difference between a powerful upright and one that is easy to live with. The Shark earns its place through its adaptable floorhead, useful dirt-detection lights and ability to collect debris on both forward and backward strokes. Removing the body gives the hose and powered head more freedom around furniture, while the pet and small hand tools cover upholstery and corners.

It still needs room to turn. The broad head can be awkward between chair legs, larger crumbs sometimes need another pass, and lifting the whole machine upstairs takes effort. The dust cup also needs manual emptying, with more contact with loose dirt than a sealed bag. Compared with the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT, the main benefits are uninterrupted corded cleaning and value; the cordless model is easier to grab for short jobs and deals with emptying at its dock.

Morphy Richards PowerSphere MRXCYLINDERFLEX

700010 · compact bagless corded cylinder

Best Budget Vacuum Cleaner

Morphy Richards PowerSphere MRXCYLINDERFLEX cylinder vacuum

View full product page

The Morphy Richards PowerSphere MRXCYLINDERFLEX is a low-cost way to get useful whole-home cleaning without a battery. Its compact cylinder follows behind a hose and adjustable floorhead, with a roughly 2L dust bin. It is particularly convincing on hard floors, picking up fine dust and larger cereal pieces.

Format
Bagless corded cylinder
Dust capacity / tanks
About 2L
Cord, reach or runtime
5m power cord; 1.5m hose

Key features

  • Adjustable suction and combination floorhead
  • Small pet turbo tool and 2-in-1 brush
  • Washable HEPA filter and bagless dust collection
  • 5m retracting power cord; 1.5m hose

Strengths

  • Strong hard-floor pickup of dust and larger crumbs
  • Useful carpet cleaning and small pet turbo tool for upholstery
  • Adjustable suction helps match the cleaning task
  • Compact cylinder with washable filter and no replacement bags

Limitations

  • Shorter cord means more socket changes
  • Body feels less robust than costlier cylinders
  • Power button can need a second press
  • Small pet turbo head is slow over large carpet areas
  • Bagless emptying exposes more loose dirt than a sealed bag

Verdict

Ordinary carpet and pet-hair cleaning is useful too, and the small turbo tool is effective on upholstery. Adjustable suction gives some control over different tasks. The filter is washable, and the bagless bin avoids replacement bags. This is a strong starting point when keeping the purchase cost low matters more than premium finish.

The 5m cord needs more socket changes than the Henry HVR160-11’s 10m cable, and the body feels less robust. The power button can need pressing twice, and the little pet head is slow if you try to cover a large carpet with it. Emptying a bagless cup also exposes more loose dirt than changing Henry’s sealed bag. Henry remains the better budget bagged choice for longer sessions; the PowerSphere keeps the initial spend lower.

Numatic Henry HVR160-11

HVR160-11 · Blue/Black bagged cylinder

Best Budget Bagged Vacuum

Numatic Henry HVR160-11 in blue and black

View full product page Useful accessories

The Numatic Henry HVR160-11 puts its budget into a simple bagged cylinder rather than a screen or charging station. The 6L bag and 10m cord suit longer cleaning sessions, with a light hose and floorhead in your hand. This is the Blue/Black model, with the same HVR160 cleaning design as the familiar red version.

Format
Bagged corded cylinder
Dust capacity / tanks
6L
Cord, reach or runtime
10m power cord

Key features

  • 6L HepaFlo bag system with contained disposal
  • 10m power cord and manually rewound cable
  • Combination floorhead with adjustable brushes
  • Hose, tubes and small hand tools; no powered pet head

Strengths

  • Effective everyday carpet and fine-dirt cleaning
  • Generous capacity reduces emptying interruptions
  • No powered brush-roll to untangle
  • Bags contain dirt during disposal
  • Long cord and useful hand tools

Limitations

  • Cumbersome body for stairs and tight corners
  • Floorhead brushes can push larger hard-floor debris
  • No powered pet tool in the standard kit
  • Replacement bags add a running cost

Verdict

Henry is particularly useful when you want fewer interruptions and less contact with loose dirt during disposal. There is no powered brush-roll to untangle, and the hose, tubes and small tools make routine cleaning straightforward. The bag is an ongoing cost, but its capacity is far greater than the cups in most cordless sticks.

The body can catch at doorways and is cumbersome to carry upstairs. On hard floors, lowered floorhead brushes can push larger crumbs ahead; adjusting the brush setting or using the hose helps. Although everyday hair pickup is useful, this standard kit is not the strongest choice for deeply embedded pet hair: the powered head on the SEBO Airbelt E3 Premium +Boost is better suited to that demanding job. Henry earns its budget place through capacity, simple upkeep and versatile cleaning, rather than effortless manoeuvring.

Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT

IP3251UKT · bagless stick with auto-empty dock

Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT

View full product page

The Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT is the cordless choice for busy mixed-floor homes. Its adaptable two-roller head collects hair and ordinary debris without a head swap, while the dock recharges the machine and empties the dust cup. It is the easiest route here to strong cordless cleaning with less daily bin handling.

Format
Bagless stick; auto-empty dock
Dust capacity / tanks
0.7L vacuum; 2L dock
Cord, reach or runtime
Up to 70 min in Eco with a non-motorised tool

Key features

  • Two powered brush-rolls in one floorhead, with dirt, floor, edge and direction sensing
  • Bending wand for reaching beneath furniture
  • Freestanding charging and auto-empty dock
  • Motorised pet, crevice and multi-surface tools

Strengths

  • Strong cleaning across carpet, hard floors and pet hair
  • Less day-to-day contact with loose dust
  • Changes floor types without swapping heads

Limitations

  • Heavy to carry and less nimble on carpet
  • Dock takes dedicated floor space

Verdict

The appeal is convenience during frequent short cleans: a bending wand reaches beneath furniture, the motorised pet tool handles upholstery and the dock deals with the collected dust afterwards. Stronger cleaning modes shorten a session substantially compared with the up-to-70-minute Eco maximum, which uses a non-motorised tool.

It is still a heavy stick and can feel stiff to steer on some carpets. The dock needs a permanent space near a socket. Our corded overall pick makes better sense when you value uninterrupted longer cleans; the smaller Shark PowerDetect Speed IA3241UKT is the useful alternative when carrying and dock size matter more.

Hoover HL2 TurboStyle HL210HMA

HL210HMA · Teal lightweight corded upright

Best Lightweight Upright Vacuum

Hoover HL2 TurboStyle HL210HMA in teal with tools

View full product page

The Hoover HL2 TurboStyle HL210HMA keeps the corded upright format while reducing the weight to 4.94kg. Its anti-tangle brush and illuminated head are useful for everyday floors, and the 2.5L gross bin capacity gives more room than a typical cordless stick. It suits buyers who find a conventional heavy upright too much to move between rooms and floors.

Format
Bagless corded upright
Dust capacity / tanks
2.5L gross capacity
Cord, reach or runtime
7.6m power cord; 1.6m stretch hose

Key features

  • 4.94kg in-use weight and swivelling floorhead
  • Anti-Twist brush-roll and floorhead lights
  • Push & Lift portable conversion with stretch hose
  • 7.6m cord; 2.5L gross dust cup; washable filter

Strengths

  • Easier to carry than most full-size corded uprights
  • Good everyday floor cleaning and straightforward steering
  • Brush design reduces hair wrapping
  • Roomy bin for a lighter vacuum

Limitations

  • Bin-release button can cause accidental spills
  • Plastics and attachments feel basic
  • Portable mode is awkward for extended above-floor work

Verdict

Light carrying weight is its most useful distinction, but the HL2 also makes a convincing cleaning case. It handles ordinary carpet and hard-floor dirt well, steers easily and limits hair wrapping around the brush. The 7.6m cable avoids battery waits, while the detachable portable section and stretch hose help with smaller areas above the floor.

The fittings and plastics feel more basic than the larger Shark, and the portable body can be awkward during a longer stair or upholstery session. More seriously, pressing the bin release accidentally while carrying it can spill the collected dust, so carry the bin clear of the button. This teal Home kit does not include the Pet version’s extra turbo tool. The HL2 is an appealing lighter alternative to our overall upright, rather than a promise of the same cleaning flexibility or refinement.

Dreame R20

VTV97A-UK · bagless stick with two floorheads

Best Value Cordless Vacuum

Dreame R20

View full product page

The Dreame R20 offers a useful way into cordless whole-home cleaning without paying for an auto-empty station. Its general head handles carpets and ordinary dirt, while a separate soft roller suits hard flooring. Automatic dirt sensing and a trigger lock add practical convenience.

Format
Bagless stick
Dust capacity / tanks
0.6L
Cord, reach or runtime
Up to 90 min maximum; about 7 min measured in Boost

Key features

  • General floorhead plus separate soft roller
  • Dirt sensing with automatic suction adjustment
  • Trigger lock for continuous running
  • Battery-percentage display and lights on the general floorhead

Strengths

  • Useful two-head kit for mixed flooring
  • Good carpet and upholstery-hair cleaning
  • Balanced body for floor and handheld work

Limitations

  • Stiff connections make tool changes awkward
  • Some spills need several passes
  • Soft roller lacks floorhead lights

Verdict

Balanced handling, a useful tool set and two distinct floorheads give it a clearer value case than a bare-bones stick. The battery display helps you plan a session, but the maximum runtime is not a promise of powered Boost cleaning: the strongest mode lasts only a short burst.

Changing heads is part of mixed-floor use, and stiff connections make those changes more effort than they should be. Some spills need extra passes, especially when pulling back over hard floors. The soft roller also lacks its own floor lighting. The R20 remains a sensible value choice for regular cleaning, with our larger Shark options better suited to buyers who prioritise outright pickup and fewer floorhead changes.

SEBO Airbelt E3 Premium +Boost

92655GB · bagged cylinder with powered carpet head

Best Vacuum Cleaner for Carpets

SEBO Airbelt E3 Premium +Boost with powered floorhead

View full product page Useful accessories

The SEBO Airbelt E3 Premium +Boost is the carpet-led choice in this guide. Its ET-1 head has its own electric brush motor, rather than relying on airflow to turn a small turbine. Together with adjustable suction and four manual brush-height settings, that gives useful control over demanding carpet and embedded hair.

Format
Bagged corded cylinder; powered carpet head
Dust capacity / tanks
3.5L
Cord, reach or runtime
10.8m cleaning reach

Key features

  • ET-1 electrically powered carpet head with four manual height settings
  • Variable suction and a temporary Boost setting
  • 3.5L Ultra-Bag system with S-Class filtration
  • Soft Airbelt bumper; Kombi hard-floor head and stored hand tools

Strengths

  • Effective removal of hair from demanding carpet
  • Powered brush and suction can be adjusted to the surface
  • Contained bag disposal and generous capacity
  • Useful furniture protection and on-board small tools
  • Fine-dust and edge pickup is useful beyond the carpet area
  • Hair pickup with little brush tangling

Limitations

  • Powered head is heavy to handle
  • Long hose is unwieldy in confined rooms
  • Premium cost and ongoing replacement bags

Verdict

Its strength is sustained carpet cleaning, with effective removal of pet and human hair and little brush tangling. Fine dust and edges were handled well too; the brush can be switched off when the floor requires it. The separate Kombi head covers hard floors, the soft body bumper protects furniture from knocks, and small crevice and upholstery tools are stored on the machine. A 3.5L bag provides contained disposal without frequent emptying.

That powered head is substantial, and the long hose can feel unwieldy in a small room. Moving the whole setup between floors is a different task from pushing it across carpet. The price and ongoing bag costs make it excessive for a small home with mostly bare floors. For a large carpeted area or recurring embedded hair, however, the extra control and cleaning ability are more useful than buying a more elaborate dock or screen.

Halo Capsule XR

CAP-XR · one battery, wall dock and 10 starter bags

Best Bagged Cordless Vacuum

Halo Capsule XR

View full product page Useful accessories

The Halo Capsule XR combines cordless convenience with a 2L disposable bag. It suits buyers who dislike releasing a cloud of loose dirt from a small cup, or who regularly fill a stick vacuum before finishing. Separate carpet and hard-floor heads, a hose and a mini powered brush give useful whole-home reach.

Format
Bagged stick
Dust capacity / tanks
2L bag
Cord, reach or runtime
Up to 70 min maximum; under 9 min measured in Boost

Key features

  • 2L disposable bag system with contained removal
  • Separate carpet and hard-floor heads
  • Stretch hose, mini powered brush and crevice/combination tools
  • Selected bundle: one battery, wall dock and ten bags

Strengths

  • Large capacity with less handling of loose dust
  • Strong carpet and hair pickup
  • Well-equipped kit for floors and smaller jobs

Limitations

  • Boost can be hard to push and runs briefly
  • Manual power and floorhead changes
  • Replacement bags add an ongoing cost
  • Larger crumbs can scatter and need another pass

Verdict

Strong cleaning, contained bag removal and generous capacity are the reasons to choose it. The hose and smaller powered head also help on stairs and upholstery, without relying entirely on lifting the main floorhead. The one-battery bundle includes its wall dock and starter bags; buy the correct Pouch02 refills when those run out.

There is no automatic floor or suction adjustment, so power levels and floorhead changes are manual. Boost can be hard to push and uses the battery quickly. Large crumbs may scatter and need another pass. The Numatic Hetty Quick HET.100 is a useful lower-cost bagged alternative, with a smaller 1L pod and a simpler tool set.

Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK

VVV56C-UK · two floorheads and freestanding charging base

Best Vacuum Cleaner for Hard Floors

Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK

View full product page

The Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK is the hard-floor specialist among these dry vacuums. Its soft roller and edge-sensing arm help collect dirt near skirting boards, while a separate general floorhead covers carpets. A bending, length-adjustable tube and freestanding charging base add useful flexibility.

Format
Bagless stick
Dust capacity / tanks
0.5L
Cord, reach or runtime
Up to 90 min maximum; about 30–35 min Auto and 6 min Max in home use

Key features

  • Soft roller with edge-sensing arm and powered hair-cutting blades
  • Separate general floorhead with dust-revealing lights
  • Four-position extendable tube that bends for low spaces
  • Freestanding charging base, combination tool and soft dusting brush

Strengths

  • Effective hard-floor and edge cleaning
  • Bending tube reduces awkward reaching
  • Charging base avoids wall mounting

Limitations

  • Small bin needs frequent emptying
  • Mixed-floor cleaning requires head changes
  • Max mode is only suitable for short bursts

Verdict

This is a stronger hard-floor proposition than buying a basic carpet-led stick and hoping its supplied head will suit every surface. The powered hair-cutting system reduces brush maintenance, and the adjustable tube makes low spaces easier to reach. It remains a dry vacuum: for washing suitable hard floors as well, compare our Best Vacuum Mops.

The small bin needs frequent emptying during a concentrated clean, and moving from hard floors to carpet means swapping heads. Max power is for short tasks, not a full-house session. Tool contents vary between packages, so different V20 packages do not all include a mini powered brush.

Gtech Platinum Duo AR46 + ATF061

AR46 + ATF061 · upright and separate handheld bundle

Best Cordless Upright Vacuum

Gtech Platinum Duo AR46 + ATF061

View full product page

The Gtech Platinum Duo combines the AirRAM Platinum AR46 upright with the Multi Platinum ATF061 handheld. Keeping the upright’s motor near the floor makes sustained floor cleaning feel different from carrying a motor-heavy stick at your wrist. The separate handheld supplies the stair and upholstery cleaning that the upright cannot do alone.

Format
Bagless upright plus handheld
Dust capacity / tanks
0.8L upright; 0.4L handheld
Cord, reach or runtime
Up to 60 min upright and 30 min handheld, separately

Key features

  • AirRAM Platinum AR46 upright and Multi Platinum ATF061 handheld
  • Powered handheld head for stairs and upholstery
  • Low-profile upright handle and floor lighting
  • Separate 0.8L and 0.4L bins; separate batteries

Strengths

  • Upright keeps floor-cleaning weight low
  • Separate handheld covers stairs and furniture
  • Useful carpet pickup without a top-heavy stick

Limitations

  • Two appliances need storage and upkeep
  • Handheld bin can be fiddly to empty
  • Floor edges can need a separate pass with the handheld

Verdict

The AirRAM is effective on carpets and pet hair, with useful floor lighting and a low handle for reaching under furniture. Its compressed dirt collection makes emptying straightforward. The Multi adds a powered stair and upholstery head, so the bundle is more versatile than buying the floor-only upright.

Two machines mean two batteries, separate bins and more storage. The upright’s battery is rated for up to 60 minutes, while the separate handheld is rated for up to 30 minutes. Pulling the AirRAM backwards seals the floorhead more closely against the floor, which takes getting used to; edges can still need a hand tool, while the handheld bin is fiddlier to empty. It is a worthwhile alternative when floor-level weight suits you, rather than the most compact one-machine solution.

  • Requires 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for connected setup

Strengths

  • Good routine debris and hair pickup across mixed floors
  • Useful room controls and generally capable obstacle avoidance
  • Station reduces frequent dust emptying and mop washing
  • Effective roller mopping with suitable settings
  • Relatively quiet vacuuming between louder emptying cycles
  • Little brush tangling and accessible rollers simplify hair removal

Limitations

  • Cannot clean stairs or fully replace deep manual cleaning
  • Edges, scattered grains and stubborn marks can need attention
  • Automatic mopping can need manual adjustment for stains
  • Large station and tall sensor tower limit placement
  • Dock visits extend cleaning; extra floors mean carrying the robot
  • Dirty-water tank and wash tray still need cleaning
  • Auto-empty cycle is loud
  • Occasional cables can still snag

Verdict

Routine rice, hair and fine-dust pickup is convincing across mixed floors, although side brushes can scatter a few grains and fine material buried in carpet is harder than surface crumbs. Vacuuming itself is relatively quiet. Low hair tangling reduces maintenance, and the removable roller cage and split brush make access easier when cleaning is needed.

Room schedules, no-go areas and multiple stored maps give useful control. The mop lifts on carpet. Automatic settings can miss dried stains, so manually selecting Max and repeating passes may be necessary. Periodic returns to empty, wash or recharge extend the job. Multiple floors also mean carrying the robot between levels and back to its station for service.

Edges may need a manual pass, mapping works best with floors cleared, and obstacle avoidance can still drag an occasional cable. The tall sensor tower limits access beneath some furniture. Allow space for the large station, empty its dirty water and clean the wash tray; the auto-empty cycle is loud. For a cheaper routine-cleaning alternative, the eufy X10 Pro Omni is worth comparing, but its tougher fine-dust and dried-stain results are weaker. Neither robot can clean stairs or replace a manual vacuum for every job.

Vacuum cleaner buying questions

Can a cordless vacuum replace a corded one?

It can if its cleaning performance, powered-head runtime and capacity suit your home. Longer sessions, large carpeted areas and heavy debris may favour a corded model; convenience can make a cordless cleaner better for frequent short jobs.

Does higher wattage mean better cleaning?

No. Motor wattage describes electrical input, not how much dirt reaches the bin. Floorhead design, airflow, brush action and how easily you can move the cleaner all matter; suction figures from different formats are not a reliable ranking on their own.

Are bags easier to empty than a bagless cup?

They usually keep collected dust more contained during disposal, but you must buy the right replacements. Bagless systems avoid disposable bags and still need careful emptying plus regular filter cleaning as directed.

Can a robot vacuum be my only cleaner?

Usually not. It can reduce routine floor cleaning, but stairs, furniture, tight edges and some deep carpet dirt still need a manual vacuum. Allow for station maintenance and occasional rescue from cables or awkward objects.

What should I look for if I have pets?

Look for effective hair pickup on your actual floors, a brush that is easy to clear and an appropriate small tool for upholstery. A pet label alone does not establish cleaning performance or mean every tool is included.

Will a normal vacuum wash carpets or collect liquid?

A dry vacuum does not wash carpet and should not collect liquid unless its manual explicitly permits it. Carpet washers spray and extract cleaning liquid; vacuum mops are intended for their specified hard surfaces. Choose the right appliance for that job.
