Sage’s Barista Express Impress is the most useful middle ground for someone who wants espresso to become a skill. The built-in grinder and tamping lever remove two early causes of mess, but you still choose the grind, handle the portafilter and steam the milk. That involvement is the point: it offers more room to learn than a one-touch machine without requiring a separate grinder on day one. Allow time to adjust new beans and practise the steam wand. It is less versatile than the Ninja for cold foam and long-coffee menus, and the larger body needs a permanent place on the worktop. Buy the Impress for espresso and learning to texture milk; choose the Bambino Plus if you already have an espresso-capable grinder and want a smaller machine with automatic milk.
