Best Dishwashers for Full-Size, Slimline and Tabletop Spaces

Compare full-size, slimline, tabletop and drawer dishwashers by fit, loading and running costs.

DishwashersProducts shortlisted: 11Last updated

Start with the space you have. A full-size dishwasher makes sense if you regularly wash plates and pans together. A slimline machine trades rack space for a narrower cabinet, and a tabletop model can handle small loads when there’s no room on the floor. Check whether the machine needs a fitted cabinet door, a connected water supply or room for drawers to pull out.

The Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMI06G is our first choice for a full-size freestanding slot. For a fitted kitchen, start with the Hotpoint Hydroforce H8I HT59 LS UK and its flexible third rack. If you cook for a large household most days, the Hisense HV693A60UVADUK gives you more room.

The Hisense HS523E15WUK is a lower-cost freestanding slimline option; choose the Bosch Series 4 SPV4EMX17G for a narrow slot behind a cabinet door. If there’s no suitable inlet on your worktop, the COMFEE Mini Plus CDWMT305W-UK can be filled by hand.

With room for a wider worktop machine and a suitable water connection, the Candy Rapidò CP 6E51LW-80 takes a larger load than a tank model. The Fisher & Paykel Series 9 DD60DDFHB9 is for buyers who want to wash and load two separate drawers at different times.

How to choose a dishwasher

Measure the gap and the open door

Measure width, height and depth in more than one place. Check the manufacturer’s required opening as well as the appliance dimensions. Leave room for hoses behind it and for the door or drawers to open without hitting an island or adjacent handle.

A full-size dishwasher is usually around 60 cm wide; slimline models are usually around 45 cm. Either size can be freestanding or built in. If you're fitting a kitchen door to the front, check the panel weight, hinge movement and plinth clearance against the installation drawing.

Think about what actually goes in

A place-setting figure measures a standard load of crockery and cutlery. It gives you a starting point for comparison; it won't tell you whether your dinner plates, stemware and roasting tin fit at the same time.

Check the rack diagram, plate clearance and whether the rack prongs fold down. A separate cutlery tray frees space below, but can reduce the height available for glasses. If you prefer a cutlery basket, check whether it comes with the machine and where it sits.

Choose a tabletop model for your water and drain setup

Some worktop dishwashers need an inlet connection; others can be filled by hand. Both need somewhere for the waste water to go. Check the exact tap or hose connection, the drain routing and whether the worktop can take the loaded weight.

A top-filled model also needs space for the jug. Check the door depth and largest practical plate size before assuming a compact dishwasher will fit underneath a wall cupboard.

Compare everyday cycles and drying

Eco is a useful starting point for ordinarily soiled dishes. It often takes longer than the faster wash. Keep short cycles for lighter loads when the manual recommends it and check whether the programme includes drying. Use an intensive programme when ordinary cycles struggle with baked-on food.

Door-opening systems let damp air escape at the end of suitable programmes. If you're fitting the machine under a worktop, follow the instructions for any moisture protection and clearance. Lightweight plastics can still hold droplets.

Read the energy label in context

Compare the electricity figure in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per 100 Eco cycles and the water figure in litres per Eco cycle. Then check how much the machine can wash at once. A narrow dishwasher can use less water for one wash and still need more washes for the same pile of dishes. If you often wash after dinner in an open-plan room, compare the labelled noise figures as well.

To estimate electricity cost per Eco wash, divide the kWh per 100 cycles by 100 and multiply by the price you pay per kWh. Other programmes, optional settings, and how you load the machine can change what you use.

Plan for detergent and hard water

Follow the machine’s instructions for detergent type and dose. A small dishwasher or a rapid cycle may need a different dose from a full-size standard wash, and automatic dosing systems can specify a particular detergent format.

If the model has a water softener, ask your supplier about local hardness and set the machine accordingly. Put dishwasher salt only in its designated reservoir. Keep the filter clear and check the spray arms can turn after you've loaded the racks.

Best Overall Dishwasher

Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMI06G dishwasher

View full product page

The Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMI06G is our first choice for everyday family washing up. Its adjustable upper basket and separate cutlery drawer leave room below for pans. At 42 dB on the label, it suits a kitchen next to a living area.

Installation
Freestanding
Rated capacity
14 place settings
Dimensions (H × W × D)
845 × 600 × 600 mm
Energy rating
B

Key features

  • Adjustable upper basket and separate cutlery drawer
  • Automatic door opening during drying on applicable programmes
  • Eco, Auto, Intensive and Express programmes
  • Home Connect app controls

Strengths

  • Flexible loading for a mix of plates and pans
  • 42 dB on the energy label suits a kitchen near a living area
  • 65 kWh per 100 Eco cycles, compared with 93 kWh for the Hisense HS622E90WUK
  • Door opens to let damp air out during drying on suitable programmes

Limitations

  • Tall glasses can be awkward under the cutlery drawer
  • Eco takes over three and a half hours

Verdict

The adjustable basket is particularly useful when your loads change from plates one evening to roasting dishes the next. The trade-off is that lifting or lowering it changes the space on both levels. Tall wine glasses can be awkward under the cutlery drawer; measure the glass and check the rack position if you use stemware often.

The door can open automatically during drying to let damp air out. Allow space in front: Bosch lists 1,155 mm of total depth with the door at 90 degrees. The Eco programme lasts 3 hours 35 minutes, so use the shorter programme when you need a quick turnaround and the load suits it. The Hisense HS622E90WUK is a better fit if the purchase price comes first.

Simple controls, thirteen place settings and an adjustable upper basket are the main reasons to buy the Hisense HS622E90WUK. It suits a household that wants a like-for-like freestanding replacement and puts the initial cost first.

Installation

Rated capacity
13 place settings
Dimensions (H × W × D)

Key features

  • Two baskets with a height-adjustable upper basket
  • Half-load option for smaller loads
  • Quick, intensive, glass and Eco programmes
  • Start delay and audible end signal

Strengths

  • Thirteen place settings for a lower upfront cost
  • Simple controls suit a straightforward replacement
  • Adjustable basket helps make room for bulkier pans

Limitations

  • 47 dB on the label, louder than the quieter full-size picks
  • 93 kWh per 100 Eco cycles and 11 litres per Eco wash
  • No third rack

Verdict

A lower basket with room for everyday plates and pans makes this a practical budget choice. If you regularly wash tall glasses and big plates together, move the upper basket before loading both levels. The two-basket layout leaves less scope to keep utensils separate than a machine with a dedicated top tray.

The lower purchase price comes with a 47 dB rating and 93 kWh per 100 Eco cycles. Those figures make the Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMI06G the stronger choice near an open living room or where you run many loads a week and value quieter operation. The Hisense makes more sense when the lower initial cost matters more.

Key features

  • Sprayed third rack shaped for small mugs, bowls and cutlery
  • Adjustable upper basket and dedicated glass programme
  • Automatic door opening near the end of the cycle
  • Zoned wash for heavily soiled items

Strengths

  • Useful third rack gives mugs and utensils their own space
  • Room for mixed loads including tall glasses and larger plates
  • Class B with 64 kWh per 100 Eco cycles
  • 39 dB on the energy label suits a kitchen near a living area
  • Door opening helps release damp air near the end of the wash

Limitations

  • The stronger zoned wash uses more electricity than Eco
  • Four-hour Eco cycle
  • Fitted cabinet front and suitable niche required

Verdict

The adjustable middle basket and roomy lower level are the reasons to choose this over the cheaper Indesit DIO 3T131 FE UK. It handles a mixed load well, and the zoned wash gives stubborn dishes a stronger option. That stronger setting uses more electricity, so keep the everyday load on Eco when you can.

The door opens near the end to release moisture. The 39 dB energy label is useful if your kitchen is next to a living room. The cabinet still needs a suitable panel, plinth clearance and a 560 mm-deep niche, even though the stated appliance depth is 555 mm. If you routinely fill all three levels and need still more capacity, the Hisense HV693A60UVADUK gives you 16 settings.

Key features

  • Three levels including a cutlery rack
  • Push&Go everyday programme
  • Eco and Auto Intensive options
  • Height-adjustable middle basket and time display

Strengths

  • Fourteen place settings behind a matching cabinet door at the lowest price of the full-size fitted picks
  • Third rack keeps utensils out of the way below
  • Intensive cycle useful for stubborn dried-on food

Limitations

  • Fixed middle-rack tines make awkward items harder to place
  • Eco can leave dried-on egg; use Auto Intensive for stubborn residue
  • Class D uses more Eco electricity than the Hotpoint and Hisense fitted picks

Verdict

The extra rack is helpful for utensils, but the middle basket’s fixed tines limit what you can slot in. Lowering that basket gives taller items space on top and takes it away underneath. Check how your biggest plates and glasses fit together before deciding that 14 settings means the same usable space as the Hotpoint Hydroforce H8I HT59 LS UK.

The Eco programme takes 3 hours 10 minutes and suits much of the daily washing up. Dried-on egg can need the stronger programme, which uses more energy. The Push&Go option helps when you prefer a simple everyday setting, while the separate intensive cycle is useful after cooking. Budget for a fitted door and verify the 560 mm niche depth.

Best Dishwasher for Large Households

Hisense HV693A60UVADUK dishwasher

View full product page

Choose the Hisense HV693A60UVADUK if you regularly fill a full-size dishwasher. Its internal light, adjustable baskets and cutlery tray make it easier to sort tall glasses and big plates. The 38 dB label is also helpful near a living area.

Installation

Key features

  • Sixteen place settings across three adjustable levels
  • Automatic detergent dosing and an internal light
  • Automatic door opening and a status light
  • Targeted spray area, glass and intensive programmes
  • ConnectedLife app controls

Strengths

  • Large capacity for mixed family loads
  • 38 dB and 49 kWh per 100 Eco cycles on the label
  • Intensive can tackle stubborn stains with targeted spray and UV switched on
  • Automatic dosing saves repeated measuring

Limitations

  • Some spray settings require the app
  • Shortest programmes are suited to light soil
  • Higher upfront cost than the other conventional integrated picks
  • Eco takes 4 hours 40 minutes

Verdict

Automatic dosing makes most sense if you run the machine often and want to stop measuring liquid detergent for every load. Intensive can tackle stubborn stains with the targeted spray and UV options switched on. The shortest cycles are better suited to lightly soiled items; keep them for cups and plates rather than the roasting tray.

The door can open to let moisture escape, and the display information on the machine is less comprehensive than the app. Some spray settings need the app, and the manual could explain them better. Eco takes 4 hours 40 minutes. Check the minimum opening of 820 × 600 × 555 mm (H × W × D). The Hotpoint Hydroforce H8I HT59 LS UK costs less to buy if 14 place settings and a flexible top rack are enough.

Key features

  • Folding lower rack prongs and an adjustable upper basket
  • Dedicated spray for the cutlery rack
  • Rubber-lined glass supports
  • Automatic door opening and controls in the hOn app
  • Eco, Intensive and automatic programmes

Strengths

  • Rack clearance helps when tall plates sit below a lowered basket
  • Intensive programme is good at removing baked-on food
  • Class A with 54 kWh per 100 Eco cycles

Limitations

  • High purchase price for a 14-place freestanding model
  • The strongest lower spray setting cannot be switched on independently
  • Eco takes close to four hours

Verdict

The 14-place capacity is only part of the story. Fold the lower rack prongs to make space for a bulky dish and put utensils on the separate rack with its own spray. Eco can cope with everyday marks, including dried macaroni and cheese. For baked-on egg, the Intensive programme does a better job.

A stronger spray area below the bottom rack helps on heavy loads, but you cannot select that boost on its own. Eco takes nearly four hours, and its 44 dB label is higher than the Bosch Series 4 SMS4EMI06G’s 42 dB. Choose the Haier when the flexible interior and heavy-load cleaning justify the extra cost.

Best Freestanding Slimline Dishwasher

Hisense HS523E15WUK dishwasher

View full product page

At 448 mm wide, the Hisense HS523E15WUK fits a narrow freestanding slot without giving up a separate cutlery tray. It’s useful if a full-size machine is too wide and you don’t want to fit a cabinet door to the front.

Installation

Dimensions (H × W × D)
845 × 448 × 600 mm
Energy rating

Key features

  • Three loading levels and a dedicated cutlery tray
  • Height-adjustable upper basket
  • Half-load option, start delay and short wash
  • Freestanding body 448 mm wide

Strengths

  • Good capacity for a narrow freestanding slot
  • Cutlery tray keeps the lower basket free for dishes

Limitations

  • Drying can leave some items wet
  • Cutlery tray can restrict space for tall items
  • Needs 600 mm of depth before allowing for connections

Verdict

A narrow machine asks you to be more deliberate about the load. Moving the upper basket to clear dinner plates can reduce the room for tall glasses and cutlery. The straightforward controls and half-load option suit everyday use, but the short cycle is a better choice for lightly soiled dishes than for a greasy pan.

Drying can be uneven, so allow time to air-dry any damp items. Check depth as well as width: the appliance is 600 mm deep before allowing for hoses and opening the door.

  • Express and adjustable speed options
  • Home Connect controls

Strengths

  • Fits a slim cabinet slot without giving up a third loading level
  • Class B and 8.7 litres per Eco cycle
  • Time remaining is visible while the cabinet door is closed
  • Door opening lets damp air out without waiting to unload

Limitations

  • Narrow racks still limit bulky cookware
  • Check the gap below the door: the front panel does not slide upwards when it opens
  • Eco takes close to four hours

Verdict

The best reason to spend more than on a basic built-in slimline machine is the combination of loading options, a B energy rating and automatic door opening. The 44 dB rating is helpful if the kitchen opens onto the living room. A narrow basket will still fill quickly with pans, particularly if you use the top level for cutlery.

Check the fitting drawing against the cabinet door and plinth. This model does not have a sliding hinge. Eco lasts almost four hours, so use the Express programme when you're short on time and the dishes suit it. Go full-size if you can free up the space and often wash large loads.

Key features

  • Six place settings in one tabletop rack
  • Five programmes, including Eco
  • Half-load option and delay start
  • Salt and rinse-aid indicators
  • Fixed rack with no height adjustment

Strengths

  • Affordable step up from a three-place mini for regular cups and plates
  • Half load is available when there isn't a full rack to wash

Limitations

  • Large dinner plates can be awkward
  • Needs a suitable water supply and drain
  • At 23 kg, it is better left in place than moved between washes
  • Door stays shut at the end, so allow time for damp items to air-dry

Verdict

The extra capacity does not mean every dinner plate fits. Look at the height of your tallest plates and the arrangement of the single rack before you commit; bowls, mugs and pots can take up the space in very different ways. The machine weighs 23 kg, so choose a sensible place to leave it connected.

There is a half-load option and a delay timer, but no automatic door opening at the end. If a suitable inlet connection isn't available, the COMFEE Mini Plus CDWMT305W-UK gives up some capacity in exchange for manual filling.

Key features

  • Six-litre fill tank with manual or hose filling
  • Drain hose can run to a sink or suitable bucket
  • Three place settings
  • Automatic door opening and separate Rapid programme

Strengths

  • No plumbed inlet needed when filled by hand
  • Narrow 420 mm footprint fits small counters
  • Hose filling is available if you later have a suitable inlet

Limitations

  • Three settings leave little space for pots and tall crockery together
  • Top-fill access and 780 mm open-door depth still need checking
  • Rapid programme has no drying phase
  • 58 dB label is relatively loud

Verdict

The three-place rating suits small everyday loads of cups, plates and cutlery. It is a poor choice if you expect to put large pans in with dinner plates or build up a full day’s washing for a family. At 420 mm wide it is narrower than the Candy Rapidò CP 6E51LW-80, but it needs 780 mm of total depth with the door open.

Automatic door opening can help moisture escape after a wash. The manual’s rapid programme skips its drying phase, so allow time to air-dry when you use it. The 58 dB rating is also higher than the full-size picks; choose a spot where a wash won’t intrude on conversations.

  • Check pull-out clearance and compare running figures per drawer

Verdict

Think in two six-place loads rather than one 12-place cavity. Each drawer takes round plates up to 280 mm, but a broad roasting tray or tall pot needs to fit a shallower space. The Eco water figure is 7.8 litres per drawer. Both drawers use water and electricity when run, so compare the per-drawer figures with the number of drawers you normally need.

This is a costly choice if you only need a quiet fitted dishwasher. A conventional 14- or 16-place model gives bigger cookware a single large lower rack. Buy the drawer model for its loading arrangement and the ability to run separate small loads, after measuring the space for both drawers to pull out.

Dishwasher questions

Can a freestanding dishwasher go under a worktop?

Sometimes. Check the manufacturer’s fitting instructions, the full depth with hoses, and the height including the top. Remove the top only if that exact model is designed for it. A freestanding machine does not automatically accept a matching cabinet door.

Does a 45 cm dishwasher hold full-size dinner plates?

It depends on plate diameter, the rack layout and how you set the upper basket. Raising the upper basket can help large plates clear the spray arm, while reducing room for glasses above. Check the loading diagram for your model.

Can a tabletop dishwasher work without a water connection?

A model with a manual fill tank can, provided you have a suitable socket and can secure the waste hose to the drain arrangement allowed by the manual. Some tabletop models need an inlet hose even though they sit on the counter.

Why is the Eco programme often longer?

It generally washes with lower heat and uses time to do more of the work. Check the programme table for the exact model and type of load. A faster cycle is useful when you need dishes back sooner, but may use more energy or omit drying.

Why are plastic containers still wet?

Plastic usually cools quickly and often has rims that trap water. Angle lids and containers where the rack allows, leave space for water to drain, and use a suitable drying option if your machine has one. Let the programme finish before unloading.

Do I need dishwasher salt if I use all-in-one tablets?

Check your water hardness and the appliance manual. An all-in-one tablet does not always replace salt in the softener reservoir, especially with harder water. Use only dishwasher salt in that reservoir and never put it in the detergent compartment.
