Best cordless vacuum cleaners for carpets, hard floors and pet hair

Compare carpet pickup, hard-floor cleaning, pet tools and easier dust disposal.

Cordless vacuum cleanersProducts shortlisted: 10Published

A cordless vacuum should make regular cleaning easier without leaving you short on carpet pickup, battery life or storage space. Our first choice is the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT for its mixed-floor cleaning and automatic emptying. The lighter Hoover HF3 DynamicClean HF310H is the better budget starting point.

Mostly hard flooring, shedding pets and dusty bin emptying call for different solutions. We compare those trade-offs alongside useful floorheads, stair tools and the difference between a battery’s headline maximum and a practical cleaning session.

Best Bagged Cordless Vacuum

Typical price: £300–£500

CAP-XR · one battery, wall dock and 10 starter bags

A large bag and strong pickup make the Halo attractive when cleaner disposal matters. Manual power and head changes, plus very strong drag in Boost on some carpets, require more judgement.

HET.100 · pink pod-based stick with six starter pods

How to choose a cordless vacuum cleaner

Start with your floors

Match the floorhead to the surfaces you clean most. A powered brush-roll agitates carpet fibres; a soft roller helps collect fine dust and larger crumbs from hard flooring. One combined head is convenient across rooms, while separate heads can be more specialised but need swapping. Check care instructions for delicate flooring and rugs before using a powered brush.

Plan around normal-mode runtime

Headline battery figures usually describe the lowest power setting, sometimes with a non-motorised tool. Powered heads, deep carpet and stronger suction reduce them. Look for a useful Standard or Auto figure and a removable battery if you need flexible charging. A spare battery adds cost and needs separate charging; it is worth buying only when your actual cleaning routine needs it.

Try the weight where you will use it

A light specification does not tell you how a vacuum feels. A high-mounted motor puts weight in your hand, especially on stairs and furniture; an upright keeps more of it near the floor. Consider the full cleaner, the handheld body and any separate dock weight rather than comparing unlike figures. If grip or mobility is a concern, try lifting, turning and changing tools before buying.

Decide how you want to empty it

Bagless cups avoid buying bags but can release dust when emptied. A sealed bag or pod contains the debris during removal and adds a recurring consumable cost. Auto-empty docks reduce everyday cup emptying, although their larger bins still need attention. Compare the vacuum’s own capacity separately from its dock, and leave space near a socket for charging and tool storage.

Check tools, hair care and ongoing costs

A powered mini head is useful for embedded hair on upholstery and carpeted stairs; a plain dusting brush is not an equivalent replacement. Anti-tangle rollers reduce wrapped hair, but still need checking. Inspect the exact package contents before paying for extra tools, bags or a stand. Follow the manual for filter care and let washable parts dry fully before refitting them.

Know when a corded cleaner still makes sense

A large carpeted home, prolonged deep cleans or several floors in one session can make a corded vacuum more practical. It avoids battery limits, although you trade away cordless convenience and manage a cable. A dry cordless vacuum collects dust and debris; it is not a substitute for washing hard floors or extracting stains from carpets.

Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT

IP3251UKT · bagless stick with auto-empty dock

Best Overall Cordless Vacuum

Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT

View full product page

The Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT is our first choice for a busy home with carpets, hard floors and pet hair. Its two-roller floorhead adapts power as it finds dirt and works effectively on both forward and backward strokes. Returning it to the freestanding dock recharges the battery and transfers debris into a larger bin, cutting the number of trips to the household bin.

Type
Bagless stick; auto-empty dock
Dust capacity
0.7L vacuum; 2L dock
Runtime
Up to 70 min in Eco with a non-motorised tool

Key features

  • Two powered brush-rolls in one floorhead, with dirt, floor, edge and direction sensing
  • Bending wand for reaching beneath furniture
  • Freestanding charging and auto-empty dock
  • Motorised pet, crevice and multi-surface tools

Pros

  • Strong cleaning across carpet, hard floors and pet hair
  • Less day-to-day contact with loose dust
  • Changes floor types without swapping heads

Cons

  • Heavy to carry and less nimble on carpet
  • Dock takes dedicated floor space

Verdict

Its advantage is thorough cleaning with less routine handling of loose dust. The same floorhead moves between carpet and hard flooring without a head swap, while the motorised pet tool covers upholstered furniture. The bending wand also makes low furniture easier to reach. Those conveniences explain its lead over simpler sticks rather than the maximum runtime figure alone.

Steering can feel heavy and stiff on some carpets, too, so smaller rooms with frequent turns expose its bulk. Carrying the vacuum upstairs or lifting it for high cleaning is a different matter: this is a substantial machine, and the dock needs its own floor space near a socket. A full session in stronger automatic modes will also be shorter than the advertised Eco maximum. The smaller Shark PowerDetect Speed IA3241UKT is worth considering when handling and storage matter more than the original model’s outright cleaning strength.

Hoover HF3 DynamicClean HF310H

HF310H · light bagless stick

Best Budget Cordless Vacuum

Hoover HF3 DynamicClean HF310H

View full product page

Hoover’s HF3 DynamicClean HF310H concentrates on the useful basics: a light body, illuminated floorhead and a brush designed to reduce hair wrapping around it. It handles ordinary dust, crumbs and pet hair on both carpet and hard flooring, although thicker rugs and larger spills can need another pass. The 2.54kg cleaner is easier to carry between floors than the large Shark models.

Type
Bagless stick
Dust capacity
0.7L
Runtime
Up to 30 min Standard floor mode; 60 min Eco handheld; 15 min Turbo

Key features

  • Anti-Twist brush-roll and floorhead lights
  • Three power levels with battery display
  • Removable battery and charging wall mount
  • Self-standing parking position; crevice tool

Pros

  • Light enough for frequent trips upstairs
  • Good everyday pickup without a premium price
  • Brush reduces hair tangling

Cons

  • Narrow bin is awkward to empty fully
  • Limited Standard floor runtime for a large home
  • Basic plastics and less nimble steering

Verdict

The HF3 makes sense for regular cleaning in a smaller home or as a convenient companion to a larger vacuum. Its self-standing position is useful when you pause to move a chair, and a battery display gives more guidance than a simple charging light. The removable battery can be charged away from the vacuum, while the supplied wall mount keeps it stored upright.

Allow for up to 30 minutes in Standard floor-cleaning mode rather than planning around the 60-minute Eco handheld maximum. Turbo reduces that further. The narrow bin can hold on to debris during emptying, and the lighter plastics and less agile turning feel more basic than the premium alternatives. Those are reasonable compromises for the budget role; they matter more if you want one machine for long whole-house cleans.

Dreame R20

VTV97A-UK · bagless stick with two floorheads

Best Value Cordless Vacuum

Dreame R20

View full product page

The Dreame R20 gives you a dedicated soft roller for hard floors as well as a general floorhead, so its value rests on useful cleaning equipment rather than a long feature list. Automatic dirt sensing changes suction as conditions change, and a trigger lock lets it keep running without holding the trigger down. The compact main body also works as a handheld.

Type
Bagless stick
Dust capacity
0.6L
Runtime
Up to 90 min maximum; about 7 min measured in Boost

Key features

  • General floorhead plus separate soft roller
  • Dirt sensing with automatic suction adjustment
  • Trigger lock for continuous running
  • Battery-percentage display and lights on the general floorhead

Pros

  • Useful two-head kit for mixed flooring
  • Good carpet and upholstery-hair cleaning
  • Balanced body for floor and handheld work

Cons

  • Stiff connections make tool changes awkward
  • Some spills need several passes
  • Soft roller lacks floorhead lights

Verdict

Carpet and embedded-hair pickup are good reasons to shortlist the R20, particularly when you also want a soft roller for delicate hard flooring. Its screen shows battery percentage and errors, and the general head has dust-revealing lights. The soft head has no lights, so the two heads do not offer identical visibility.

Some medium-pile spills take repeated passes, and debris can gather in front of the general head when you pull it backwards on hard flooring. Attachment connections can be very stiff, which takes some shine off the versatility if you swap tools often. The headline 90-minute claim is a favourable-condition maximum; stronger automatic cleaning shortens it, and Boost is a brief burst. It remains a convincing step up from basic sticks when equipment and manageable handling matter more than effortless tool changes.

Shark Stratos Pet Pro IZ400UKT

IZ400UKT · single battery and motorised pet tool

Best Cordless Vacuum for Pet Hair

Shark Stratos Pet Pro IZ400UKT

View full product page

The single-battery Shark Stratos Pet Pro IZ400UKT combines strong hair pickup with a motorised pet tool for furniture. Its two-roller floorhead saves you changing heads between carpet and hard flooring, while Clean Sense IQ automatically adjusts suction when it detects more dirt. This is the one-battery version, so it avoids paying for a second battery before you know you need one.

Type
Bagless stick
Dust capacity
0.7L
Runtime
Up to 60 min in Eco with a non-motorised tool

Key features

  • Anti Hair Wrap Plus two-roller floorhead
  • Automatic dirt sensing and suction adjustment
  • Bending wand and removable battery
  • Motorised pet, crevice and multi-surface tools; one battery

Pros

  • Strong hair pickup from floors and upholstery
  • One floorhead handles mixed flooring
  • Removable battery offers flexible charging

Cons

  • Bulky for stairs and high cleaning
  • Manual emptying and separate tool storage

Verdict

The Stratos earns its pet-hair role through the combination of floor pickup, reduced brush-roll tangling and the powered hand tool. A bending wand helps you clean under low furniture, and the removable battery can charge on or off the machine. The anti-odour cartridge treats smells inside the vacuum; it is not a substitute for cleaning the bin and filters.

Handling remains substantial, particularly when carrying it upstairs or working above floor level. It also lacks the automatic disposal of the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT, and tools need their own storage. The 60-minute figure applies to Eco with a non-motorised attachment, so do not confuse it with an hour of powered carpet cleaning or the twin-battery Stratos package.

Dyson V8 Cyclone

SV55 · updated button-operated V8 Cyclone

Best Cordless Vacuum for Carpets

Dyson V8 Cyclone

View full product page

The Dyson V8 Cyclone is the updated button-operated model, rather than the older trigger-operated V8. Its Motorbar head lifts everyday debris and embedded hair effectively from carpets and rugs, making it a sensible choice when most of your cleaning is on soft flooring. Three power modes and a replaceable battery keep the controls and ownership practical.

Type
Bagless stick
Dust capacity
About 0.5L
Runtime
Up to 60 min maximum; less in stronger modes

Key features

  • Motorbar floorhead with hair-removing vanes
  • Single-button operation and three power modes
  • Replaceable battery; up to 60-minute maximum
  • Crevice tool and sealed filtration

Pros

  • Effective carpet and embedded-hair pickup
  • No trigger to hold during longer cleans
  • Simple controls and replaceable battery

Cons

  • Small bin interrupts deeper cleaning
  • Motorbar can push hair clumps on hard flooring
  • No dedicated soft roller in this package

Verdict

The appeal here is effective carpet cleaning without the extra controls and bulk of more elaborate machines. You can keep it running with a button rather than holding a trigger, and the crevice tool reaches narrow gaps. Its sealed filtration and hair-removing brush design are useful features, although no vacuum completely removes the need for maintenance.

The supplied Motorbar is less convincing when faced with larger clumps of hair on hard flooring, where it can push them around before collecting them. A dedicated soft roller is not part of this selected package. The modest dustbin also means stopping during deeper cleans. Carpet-heavy homes get the clearest benefit; for mainly hard floors, the Dreame V20 Pro-A has the more suitable floorhead arrangement.

Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK

VVV56C-UK · two floorheads and freestanding charging base

Best Cordless Vacuum for Hard Floors

Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK

View full product page

The Dreame V20 Pro-A VVV56C-UK puts a dedicated soft roller at the centre of its hard-floor appeal. A sensing arm closes the gap along edges, while powered blades in the roller tackle hair as it collects. A separate general floorhead covers carpets, and the adjustable bending tube reaches under furniture without forcing you down to floor level.

Type
Bagless stick
Dust capacity
0.5L
Runtime
Up to 90 min maximum; about 30–35 min Auto and 6 min Max in home use

Key features

  • Soft roller with edge-sensing arm and powered hair-cutting blades
  • Separate general floorhead with dust-revealing lights
  • Four-position extendable tube that bends for low spaces
  • Freestanding charging base, combination tool and soft dusting brush

Pros

  • Effective hard-floor and edge cleaning
  • Bending tube reduces awkward reaching
  • Charging base avoids wall mounting

Cons

  • Small bin needs frequent emptying
  • Mixed-floor cleaning requires head changes
  • Max mode is only suitable for short bursts

Verdict

Its hard-floor cleaning is more persuasive than suction numbers alone suggest: fine spills and larger dry debris are handled well, including near skirting boards. The freestanding charging base avoids wall drilling and keeps tools together. A combination tool and soft dusting brush are included in this UK package; the supplied hand tools cover crevices and gentle dusting.

You will still change heads between floor types, and the 0.5L bin needs frequent emptying in a busy home. Around 30–35 minutes in Auto is a more useful planning figure than the headline maximum, with Max lasting only a short burst. This suits regular hard-floor cleaning better than a long uninterrupted deep clean of a large, carpet-heavy house.

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty IA3241UKT

IA3241UKT · smaller auto-empty dock

Best Compact Auto-Empty Cordless Vacuum

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty IA3241UKT

View full product page

Shark’s PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty IA3241UKT is the more manageable alternative to the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT. The lighter vacuum and smaller dock suit homes where carrying, storage and a quick return to the charging stand matter. Dirt, floor, edge and direction sensing adjust power, while a sharply angled light makes fine debris easier to see on hard flooring.

Type
Bagless stick; auto-empty dock
Dust capacity
0.47L vacuum; 2L dock
Runtime
Up to 60 min in Eco with a non-motorised tool

Key features

  • Compact freestanding auto-empty charging dock
  • Dirt, floor, edge and direction sensing
  • Angled hard-floor lighting and bending wand
  • Motorised hand tool and duster-crevice tool

Pros

  • Lighter handling than the original PowerDetect
  • Less frequent manual bin emptying
  • Smaller dock and folding wand aid storage

Cons

  • Small on-machine bin for concentrated mess
  • Slow recharge between long cleans
  • Head can need help over larger debris

Verdict

Automatic emptying is especially useful when you clean little and often: return the vacuum to its dock and it charges while transferring the contents of its small bin. The bending wand helps with low furniture and compact storage, and a powered hand tool handles smaller areas. This is still a dry vacuum, so floor lighting and automatic power do not replace mopping.

The lighter design does not mean unlimited convenience. You may need to tap the head over some larger debris, and the small on-machine bin can fill during a concentrated clean before you reach the dock. Charging takes several hours, making it less suitable for repeated long sessions. It is a better storage and handling compromise than the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT, while that larger model remains our first choice for outright mixed-floor cleaning.

Halo Capsule XR

CAP-XR · one battery, wall dock and 10 starter bags

Best Bagged Cordless Vacuum

Halo Capsule XR

View full product page

The Halo Capsule XR takes a different approach to the usual bagless stick: dirt collects inside a 2L disposable bag, so you replace the bag instead of tipping a dust cup over a bin. That large capacity and contained disposal are its main advantages. This kit includes one battery, a wall dock, ten starter bags and separate heads for carpet and hard floors.

Type
Bagged stick
Dust capacity
2L bag
Runtime
Up to 70 min maximum; under 9 min measured in Boost

Key features

  • 2L disposable bag system with contained removal
  • Separate carpet and hard-floor heads
  • Stretch hose, mini powered brush and crevice/combination tools
  • Selected bundle: one battery, wall dock and ten bags

Pros

  • Large capacity with less handling of loose dust
  • Strong carpet and hair pickup
  • Well-equipped kit for floors and smaller jobs

Cons

  • Boost can be hard to push and runs briefly
  • Manual power and floorhead changes
  • Replacement bags add an ongoing cost
  • Larger crumbs can scatter and need another pass

Verdict

Carpet flour and hair pickup are strong, and the dedicated hard-floor roller improves collection of larger crumbs compared with using the main head on that surface. The stretch hose and mini powered brush also give the kit useful reach for smaller jobs. It makes a convincing bagged alternative for someone who dislikes repeatedly emptying small, dusty cups.

Larger cereal-like debris can scatter and need a second pass, even though fine dust and hair pickup are strong. The XR leaves power selection and head changes to you. Boost can make it difficult to push on some carpets and drains the battery quickly, so the middle setting is often the more useful everyday choice. You must also budget for genuine replacement bags after the supplied pack is used. Keep to the 2L Pouch02 type for Capsule X/XR; the original Capsule’s smaller pouches are different.

Numatic Hetty Quick HET.100

HET.100 · pink pod-based stick with six starter pods

Best Value Bagged Cordless Vacuum

Numatic Hetty Quick HET.100

View full product page

Numatic’s Hetty Quick HET.100 is the pink counterpart of the basic Henry Quick. Dust is compacted into a disposable filter pod, giving it a useful 1L capacity without needing to empty loose debris directly from a cup. Six pods are included, so a refill pack is a later purchase rather than something you need before the first clean.

Type
Bagged stick
Dust capacity
1L pod
Runtime
Up to 60 min maximum; shorter with powered cleaning

Key features

  • 1L sealed filter-pod system
  • Removable battery
  • Crevice and combination tools
  • Six starter pods included

Pros

  • Tidy pod removal instead of tipping loose dust
  • Useful capacity for everyday cleaning
  • Straightforward controls and removable battery

Cons

  • Brush-roll needs hair maintenance
  • Basic kit lacks a mini powered upholstery head
  • Replacement pods add an ongoing cost

Verdict

Hetty suits someone who values straightforward cleaning and tidy disposal over automatic power control or an elaborate tool kit. The removable battery offers flexible charging, and the basic crevice and combination tools cover corners and light dusting. The pink colour does not change how the basic Henry Quick cleaner works.

The powered brush still needs checking for wrapped hair, and the kit is less suitable for embedded pet hair on upholstery than a package with a dedicated mini powered head. It is also not the strongest option for demanding deep-carpet cleaning. The Halo Capsule XR offers the more capable, larger-capacity bagged alternative; Hetty keeps the purchase simpler and the upfront cost lower, with replacement pods remaining an ongoing expense.

Gtech Platinum Duo AR46 + ATF061

AR46 + ATF061 · upright and separate handheld bundle

Best Cordless Upright Vacuum

Gtech Platinum Duo AR46 + ATF061

View full product page

Gtech’s Platinum Duo bundles the AirRAM Platinum AR46 upright with the Multi Platinum ATF061 handheld. The upright keeps much of its weight low down, making it a useful alternative to carrying a stick motor in your hand throughout a floor clean. The separate handheld then takes over for stairs, upholstery and tighter spaces.

Type
Bagless upright plus handheld
Dust capacity
0.8L upright; 0.4L handheld
Runtime
Up to 60 min upright and 30 min handheld, separately

Key features

  • AirRAM Platinum AR46 upright and Multi Platinum ATF061 handheld
  • Powered handheld head for stairs and upholstery
  • Low-profile upright handle and floor lighting
  • Separate 0.8L and 0.4L bins; separate batteries

Pros

  • Upright keeps floor-cleaning weight low
  • Separate handheld covers stairs and furniture
  • Useful carpet pickup without a top-heavy stick

Cons

  • Two appliances need storage and upkeep
  • Handheld bin can be fiddly to empty
  • Combined runtime is split between machines

Verdict

The AirRAM’s carpet pickup and low-profile handle are the reasons to favour this pairing over a floor-only upright. The handheld adds the powered tool and smaller attachments that the upright cannot provide, with lights helping in darker corners. Their 0.8L and 0.4L bins are separate, as are the batteries and charging needs.

This is a complete retail bundle, not one machine that transforms between modes. Allow storage space for both, and expect the handheld’s smaller bin to need more frequent emptying. Its bin release can be fiddly, and it can feel bulky during sustained one-handed work. The advertised combined 90 minutes means up to 60 minutes from the upright plus 30 from the handheld; it never gives the upright a 90-minute cleaning session.

Cordless vacuum cleaner questions

Can a cordless vacuum replace a corded one?

It can for regular cleaning when its floorhead, normal-mode battery life, capacity and tools suit your home. Large carpeted homes and long deep-cleaning sessions may still favour a corded cleaner. Judge your actual routine rather than suction numbers or an Eco runtime claim alone.

How much battery life do I need?

Think about the time spent actively vacuuming, then allow a margin for stronger modes and battery ageing. Check runtime with the powered floorhead you will use. The longest quoted figure may use a non-motorised tool, and two batteries or two machines provide separate sessions rather than a longer life from one battery.

Are bagged cordless vacuums better for dust?

A bag or sealed pod can make disposal tidier because you remove contained dirt rather than tip loose debris from a cup. It adds replacement costs and still needs correct fitting and maintenance. Filtration claims describe specified test conditions and do not make any vacuum a treatment for an allergy.

What should pet owners prioritise?

Look for reliable hair pickup on your floors, a brush-roll that is easy to maintain and a powered small head if pets use upholstered furniture. Capacity and contained emptying matter when you collect a lot of hair. Anti-tangle technology helps but does not remove the need to check for wrapped hair or blockages.

Do I need a soft roller for hard floors?

It can help with fine dust and larger dry debris, especially on delicate hard flooring, but a good combined head may save you swapping attachments. Check the floor manufacturer’s care guidance and the vacuum’s approved surfaces. A dry soft roller does not wash or mop the floor.

Should I buy spare bags or a second battery immediately?

Check what the exact package already includes. Use starter bags or pods before ordering the correct replacement type; how long they last depends on the dirt you collect. A second genuine compatible battery is useful when your routine regularly exceeds one charge, rather than an essential purchase for every home.
